Planting Fruit Trees in Autumn
Autumn is one of the best seasons for planting fruit trees.
Milder temperatures, naturally higher soil moisture and the gradual transition of plants into dormancy create favourable conditions for planting fruit trees.
It is also an excellent time to plan your future orchard – choose the right location, combine different fruit species and varieties, and consider how you want your garden to develop over the coming years.
Why plant fruit trees in autumn?
After the hot summer months, the soil is still relatively warm while air temperatures gradually begin to fall. Plants are exposed to less heat stress, and moisture loss is lower than during summer planting.
Autumn rainfall also helps maintain more consistent soil moisture. However, newly planted trees still need watering during prolonged dry periods.
A tree planted in autumn has time to gradually adapt to its new location before active growth begins in spring.
Container-grown fruit trees can be planted throughout the year.
The fruit trees available at Flora Design Garden Centre are well-developed and container-grown. Their root ball remains intact during planting, allowing them to be planted throughout the year whenever weather and soil conditions are suitable.
Planting should be avoided when the soil is frozen or excessively waterlogged, as well as during periods of extreme summer heat.
Autumn nevertheless offers several advantages – temperatures are milder, the soil generally retains moisture more effectively, and plants gradually enter their natural dormant period.
How to choose the right fruit tree?
Do not choose a tree solely according to your favourite fruit. Before buying, consider how much space the mature tree will require, how much sunlight the location receives, the soil conditions and drainage, and whether the particular species is suitable for your garden.
The characteristics of the individual variety are equally important. Consider flowering and ripening periods, fruit size and flavour, and any specific pollination requirements.
If you have enough space, combining different species and varieties with different ripening periods can provide fresh fruit over a longer part of the season.
How to plant a fruit tree correctly
Choose a suitable location and prepare a planting hole wide enough to comfortably accommodate the root ball.
Carefully remove the tree from its container and place it in the hole at the correct planting depth. Avoid planting it too deeply. Backfill with soil and gently firm the soil around the root ball.
Water thoroughly after planting. Continue to monitor soil moisture over the following weeks – cooler autumn weather does not necessarily mean there will be sufficient rainfall.
Taller trees may require temporary staking to prevent excessive movement in strong winds while the root system becomes established.
A layer of organic mulch around the tree can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.

When choosing a pecan tree, available space, local growing conditions and pollination requirements should all be taken into consideration.
What you plant today can become part of your garden for many years.
A fruit tree is a long-term addition to the garden. Choosing the right location and the right variety is just as important as planting it correctly.
Autumn provides very good conditions for creating or expanding an orchard. And because container-grown plants are not restricted to a short planting season, they can be planted whenever weather and soil conditions are suitable.
