Leyland Cypress – Five Varieties and Their Distinctive Features
Explore the foliage colours, crown shapes and ornamental forms of five Leyland cypress varieties.
Leyland Cypress – Five Varieties and Their Distinctive Features
When we think of Leyland cypress, we usually picture a tall, dense, fast-growing evergreen hedge. However, this popular conifer offers many more possibilities.
Different varieties vary in foliage colour, crown shape and branching habit. Some have a more defined pyramidal outline, others are available in a wide range of ornamental forms, while 'Gold Rider' stands out with its golden-yellow foliage.
At Flora Design Garden Centre, we offer five Leyland cypress varieties, including 'Oger', the newest addition to our selection. Here are their distinctive features to help you make an informed choice.
Leyland Cypress 'Oger' – New at Flora Design
'Oger' is the latest addition to our selection. It is characterised by upright growth, strong branches and dense branching that contributes to a well-shaped crown.
According to the grower's descriptions, its foliage is green with a blue-green tint. 'Oger' is a vigorous variety suitable for both row planting and individual specimens.
It offers another option for customers looking for a dense evergreen conifer with a well-defined shape.
Leyland Cypress 'Vito' – Rich Green Foliage and Ornamental Forms
'Vito' is a green variety with upright growth and a dense crown. At Flora Design, it is available not only in its natural form but also as a range of ready-trained plants.
We offer 'Vito' as green screens, balls, spirals and bonsai. These are suitable for entrances, pathways, garden arrangements and formal spaces where an established shape is desired.
Leyland Cypress 'Pyramidalis' – A Distinctive Pyramidal Shape
'Pyramidalis' has an upright growth habit and a pyramidal outline.
It is suitable when the natural shape of the tree is an important part of the garden design. It can be grown individually or planted in rows where a consistent appearance is desired.
Leyland Cypress 'Gold Rider' – Golden-Yellow Foliage Throughout the Year
'Gold Rider' is the most visually distinctive of the five varieties, thanks to its golden-yellow foliage. Its colour becomes particularly striking in sunny positions, creating a contrast with green conifers.
At Flora Design Garden Centre, we offer 'Gold Rider' both with a natural crown and in ready-trained ornamental forms, including golden screens, balls, spirals and bonsai.
These plants are suitable for arrangements where foliage colour and a carefully shaped crown are important design elements.
Classic Leyland Cypress – The Versatile Green Form
Classic Leyland cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii) is well known for its vigorous growth and ability to form tall evergreen screens.
Without regular trimming, it develops into a large conifer with a conical crown. It is suitable for spacious gardens and plantings where a dense green screen is desired.
Comparing Five Leyland Cypress Varieties
Although the green varieties can appear similar, each has features worth considering.
| Variety | Foliage colour | Crown shape | Main feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| 'Oger' | Green with a blue-green tint | Upright, densely branched | Strong branches and full crown |
| 'Vito' | Rich green | Upright | Dense crown with closely spaced branches |
| 'Pyramidalis' | Green | Pyramidal | Defined vertical outline |
| 'Gold Rider' | Golden yellow | Conical | Distinctive year-round colour |
| Classic | Green to dark green | Conical | Vigorous growth and versatility |
Which Leyland Cypress Variety Should You Choose?
If you prefer green foliage, consider classic Leyland cypress, 'Vito', 'Pyramidalis' or the new 'Oger'. The choice depends mainly on the desired shape, plant size and planting location.
For golden-yellow foliage, 'Gold Rider' is the obvious option. If you are looking for a ready-trained ornamental plant, explore the selection of 'Vito' and 'Gold Rider'.
All five varieties are vigorous growers. Allow sufficient space for their development, as even varieties with a relatively narrow crown can eventually reach substantial dimensions.
Ready-Trained Ornamental Forms – More Landscaping Options
One of the advantages of the Flora Design selection is the choice between naturally shaped trees and ready-trained ornamental plants.
For 'Vito' and 'Gold Rider', we offer screens, balls, spirals and bonsai. These provide an established ornamental shape immediately after planting, without waiting years for the plants to be trained.
Ready-trained forms are suitable for entrances, pathways, formal spaces and garden arrangements. Periodic trimming is required to maintain their shape.
