Description
Appearance and development
Red-leaved Norway Maple 'Royal Red' is a deciduous ornamental tree with a spreading crown and large, palmately lobed leaves. New growth and mature foliage are distinguished by deep red-burgundy to purple colouring, which is generally expressed well during the growing season when the plant receives suitable light.
In autumn, the leaves change colour before falling. The flowers are discreet and appear before or around leaf emergence, followed by the winged fruits characteristic of maples.
Suitable location and use
The plant is suitable for specimen planting as a focal point in a lawn, a formal garden or a larger private garden. It can also be included in groups with other deciduous trees and shrubs, with its dark foliage creating contrast against plants with green, silvery or light-coloured leaves.
As the tree develops a crown that can require considerable space, choose a location with sufficient clearance from buildings, paths, fences and overhead cables.
Growing conditions
Choose a sunny to lightly shaded position. Brighter light generally supports a stronger expression of the dark foliage colour, while in deeper shade the colour may be less intense.
It prefers deep, moderately moist and well-drained soil. After planting, maintain even moisture without leaving the roots in standing water for extended periods. Avoid locations subject to persistent compaction or waterlogging.
Planting and care
Plant during a suitable tree-planting period, when the soil is neither frozen nor waterlogged. The planting hole should be wide enough to accommodate the roots without bending them, and the root collar should remain level with the surrounding ground.
Water thoroughly after planting and monitor moisture during the first season, especially through prolonged dry periods. Mulching around the root zone can help maintain more even moisture, but keep the mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.
Prune only when necessary to remove dry, damaged or poorly positioned branches. Carry out formative pruning carefully and avoid periods of intense sap flow. Fertilisation should be based on the soil and the plant's condition, without excessive nitrogen application.
Important information about size
The stated size, Circ. 8–10 cm, refers to the particular plant currently offered, not to the size the tree will reach at full maturity.
