Autumn Planter Arrangements – Ideas with Pansies and Chrysanthemums

Autumn is an ideal time to refresh flower arrangements on patios, balconies, at entrances and in gardens. With the right choice of plants and proper planter preparation, outdoor spaces can remain colourful throughout the cooler months.

Pansies and chrysanthemums are among the most popular choices for autumn planting. Their wide range of colours and forms makes it possible to create different arrangements to suit the size, shape and location of each planter.

From Summer to Autumn Flowers – Giving Your Planters a New Look

In spring, some of our customers purchased decorative planters from Flora Design Garden Centre, which we planted with summer geraniums.

As autumn approached, they returned with the same planters and asked us to refresh them for the new season.

We replaced the summer flowers with pansies and chrysanthemums, creating new arrangements suited to the autumn months.

Reusing quality planters is a practical way to enjoy seasonal colour without purchasing new containers every year.

Useful tip: Healthy geraniums can be kept over winter in a bright, cool, frost-free location and grown again the following season.

Pansies and Chrysanthemums – Combining Colours and Forms

Pansies are an excellent choice for autumn planting thanks to their wide colour range and tolerance of cool weather. Under favourable conditions, they continue flowering in autumn and can resume abundant flowering after winter.

Chrysanthemums offer generous blooms in white, pink, yellow, orange, red and burgundy. Their rounded shape adds volume and height to seasonal arrangements.

For our customers, we created several different autumn combinations. Some planters feature chrysanthemums surrounded by colourful pansies, combining contrasting and complementary shades.

The chrysanthemums provide the main structure and volume, while the lower-growing pansies fill the surrounding spaces with colour.

We also created an arrangement featuring a single white chrysanthemum in a woven basket, demonstrating how one well-developed, abundantly flowering plant can make an attractive seasonal display.

Our advice: When combining plants, consider their height, shape and colours. Choose similar shades for a softer appearance or contrasting colours for a more striking arrangement.

Preparing Planters and Potting Mix

Proper preparation supports healthy plant growth, particularly in autumn, when temperatures fall and potting mixes dry more slowly.

Cleaning and Checking the Planters

Before planting, we removed the old summer flowers and prepared the containers for their new arrangements.

When reusing planters, clean them thoroughly and check that their drainage holes are clear so excess water can escape.

Expanded Clay for Drainage

We placed a layer of expanded clay pebbles at the bottom of the planters as a drainage material.

Expanded clay is lightweight and porous. However, a layer of clay pebbles does not replace drainage holes and does not, by itself, guarantee improved drainage from the potting mix.

Peat-Based Potting Mix with Volcanic Stones

For planting, we used fresh peat-based potting mix blended with volcanic stones.

Suitable porous mineral amendments can improve the structure and air permeability of the growing medium and help prevent excessive compaction.

This is particularly beneficial in planters, where root development is restricted to a limited volume of growing medium.

How to Plant Pansies and Chrysanthemums in Containers

Once the planters were prepared, we arranged and planted the flowers.

1. Plan the arrangement. Position the plants while they are still in their nursery pots to decide on the best layout.

2. Consider height and volume. Taller chrysanthemums can be placed in the centre or towards the back, with lower-growing pansies arranged around them.

3. Plant at the correct depth. Keep the top of each root ball approximately level with its original growing depth.

4. Add potting mix. Fill the spaces around the roots and gently firm the mix without compacting it excessively.

5. Leave room for watering. Keep the surface of the potting mix slightly below the rim of the planter to prevent water from overflowing.

6. Water after planting. Water thoroughly until the growing medium is evenly moist and excess water can drain away.

Avoid overcrowding the plants. Allow enough space for root growth and further development.

Caring for Autumn Planter Arrangements

Light and Position

Pansies and chrysanthemums prefer bright locations. Adequate sunlight supports flowering and helps maintain compact growth.

Watering

Water requirements generally decrease during autumn. Check the moisture level of the potting mix rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

Water when the upper layer begins to dry, and avoid leaving planters standing in water-filled saucers for extended periods.

Removing Spent Flowers

Regularly remove faded flowers and damaged leaves. This helps keep arrangements attractive and encourages further flowering in pansies.

Feeding

When using a fresh, pre-fertilised potting mix, immediate additional feeding is usually unnecessary. If required, apply a suitable fertiliser according to the plants' condition and the manufacturer's instructions.

Protection from Cold Weather

Pansies generally tolerate low temperatures well, although roots in containers are more exposed to freezing.

The cold tolerance of chrysanthemums varies depending on the cultivar and growing conditions. During severe frost, move sensitive arrangements to a sheltered location whenever possible.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using planters without drainage holes.

  • Planting flowers too closely together.

  • Reusing heavily compacted or exhausted potting mix.

  • Overwatering during cool weather.

  • Leaving frost-sensitive chrysanthemums unprotected.

  • Applying excessive fertiliser immediately after planting.

Autumn Flower Arrangements at Flora Design Garden Centre

For our customers, we created a selection of autumn arrangements in decorative planters and woven baskets.

We combined white and pink-purple chrysanthemums with pansies in yellow, violet, pink and burgundy. We also prepared a separate arrangement featuring a white chrysanthemum in a woven basket.

These examples demonstrate that autumn planting can include colourful mixed arrangements or simpler displays featuring a single plant variety.

Refreshing existing planters is a practical solution for patios, balconies, entrances and gardens, allowing the same containers to be used throughout different seasons.

If you would like to create your own autumn flower arrangement, explore our collection of rattan and bamboo planters, suitable for seasonal planting and decorating patios, balconies and entrances.
